How to Find Fans and Make Money With Your Music

If you don’t have an audience, music is nothing more than a really (really) expensive hobby.

If I asked you the main reason why your music isn’t selling well, what would your answer be?

Lack of good music?

Not playing enough shows?

Trying viral video ideas but haven’t had one yet?

What if I told you that all 3 of those answers have one thing in common: Lack of an audience.

Musicians need to have their ideal audience in place so that they can thrive in the music world. Fans and audiences love the music, show up to shows, and help your videos go viral. Not to mention they buy your merchandise, see you on tours, stream your songs, purchase your albums on vinyl, and tell their friends all about you, their favorite musician!

So, you need to have a super engaged fanbase to get there. Now, how do you do that?

It means you need to have 3 things in place in your music career:

  1. A well defined music brand

  2. An ideal audience

  3. A media strategy

Why these things?

A music brand communicates who you are to the world.

Knowing who your ideal audience is allows you to focus on them.

A media strategy let’s you best communicate with that audience.

Let’s take a look at these a little more to see how they can work for you.

Branding

At the core, brand is a world that means all the ways you interact with your fans, giving two methods of communication: How you appear to fans and how you talk to fans. Think of it as your musical key signature so you always know what notes to play. In the same way, a music brand guides you to knowing what to wear, what to say on your social media posts, what colors and fonts you can use in your next album  release, and even how you act in live performances.

Sometimes, musicians struggle to come up with a brand for themselves. This is because branding is usually a visual thing and music is an auditory experience.

Branding calls for you to come up with a visual representation of your music.

A few questions to ask yourself for branding:

  1. What kind of brand do other musicians who I sound like have?

  2. What 3 words would I use to describe my music?

  3. If I had one sentence to tell someone about my music, what would I say?

Audience

Audience is about knowing who your fans are and where to find them.

Think about who has listened to you music and who loves your music already. How would you describe them? are there any similarities in the fans you currently have? Do you know where to find them online and in person?

That is the point of figuring out who your audience is! You need to know what they are like, what other interests they have, and where to find them. that way you fan focus your energy on going to those same places and locations in person and online and have a much better chance of getting a new person to become a new fan!

Think about the following things:

  1. How would you describe your current fans?

  2. What other interests do these people have?

  3. What is the best place I can engage with them? (Think places like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, bars vs coffee shops, Twitch vs Renaissance Fairs, etc.)

Media

It is so secret that you need to have a plan in place to make the most of social media.

If you are randomly posting things into the void of the internet without a plan in place of how to get that content in front of your fans, you are doing the same thing as searching for a 4-leaf clover. It can be done, sure, but wouldn’t you rather have a plan in place so you know it will happen!?

Social media is based on the following principles:

  1. You need to make content so the right people find you.

  2. You need to engage with those people so you keep them as fans.

  3. You need to be thinking about both current fans and new fans at the same time.

By planning out these steps, you can be sure that the things you create will fit your brand and audience, making sure that you have a better chance of things going viral!
